IDA Ireland embarks on strategic investment mission to US

Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland is today accompanying Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris TD on an official Ministerial visit to California.

Over the course of the visit, the delegation will meet with some of IDA Ireland’s largest clients in the Technology and Life Sciences sectors headquartered on the West Coast. IDA Ireland will also attend the prestigious JP Morgan Healthcare conference where IDA’s team will engage with some of the world's foremost Life Sciences companies.

The U.S. is Ireland’s largest source of FDI, with over 1000 operations employing more than 218,000 people equating to almost 10% of Ireland’s workforce. US West Coast clients in Ireland account for 296 operations and employ 69,000 people across leading areas of innovation in sectors that include Technology, Life Sciences, FinTech and Engineering.

Speaking ahead of the visit, the Tánaiste said, “Ireland’s longstanding economic relationship with California is a cornerstone of our wider partnership with the United States. The economic partnership between our two countries supports prosperity and employment on both sides of the Atlantic, and this visit provides an opportunity to further deepen that relationship.

The scale of two-way trade and investment between Ireland and the US underscores the strength of our economic ties. Not only is the US Ireland’s biggest trading and investment partner, Ireland is the fifth largest source of foreign direct investment in the U.S., with investment by Irish companies valued at $390 billion. Across the US, more than 200,000 people are employed by almost 800 Irish companies.

This visit underlines the Government’s commitment to enhancing these mutually beneficial links into the future.”

Michael Lohan, CEO, IDA Ireland said, "This mission is about deepening our partnerships at the highest levels by engaging directly with the C-suite of some of the world’s most influential companies, particularly within the Life Sciences and Technology sectors, who have significant operations in Ireland.

Competition for foreign direct investment has never been as intense and visits such as these serve to increase awareness of Ireland’s attractiveness as a place to invest, providing an excellent opportunity to reaffirm Ireland’s appeal as a hub for tech innovation and manufacturing excellence as underpinned by our proven talent pool, strong track record and our unique access to the European market.

IDA Ireland’s strategy, Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025-29 is focused on strengthening long-term investment, scaling cutting edge innovation, driving sustainable change and maximising regional growth, and I look forward to discussing and sharing perspectives on the global investment landscape and Ireland’s value proposition to enable and support ongoing international investment opportunities.”
