The North East region comprises the counties Cavan, Louth and Monaghan. The region has a population of 231,267 (Census 2006) and is the conduit of the busiest economic corridor in Ireland - between Dublin and Belfast - Ireland’s two largest cities.
The main urban centres in the region are Drogheda, Dundalk, Monaghan Town and Cavan Town. The entire region is within one hour’s drive of either Dublin or Belfast and their international airports. The eastern side of the region provides direct access to the main shipping routes to Europe and the UK. Within the Region there are 3 ports at Dundalk (bulk cargo), Drogheda (bulk cargo and LO/LO) and Greenore (a deep sea port with LO/LO facilities, RO/RO facilities are planned). The major cargo and RO/RO ports of Dublin, Warrenpoint, Belfast and Larne are all within a 40 to 90 minute range.
The region is also traversed by the Dublin/Belfast Rail Line with passenger and cargo terminals at Drogheda and Dundalk. Over 5,000 passengers commute to Dublin and Belfast each day.
The foreign owned companies with operations in the region include Xerox, Coca Cola, Heinz, Becton Dickinson, Warner Chilcott, National Pen, ABB, Bose, CG Power Sysems Ireland, Wellman International, International Fund Services, Daiwa Securities, Vesta, Moffett, Boxmore, Diageo, Rexxam Ireland Co. Ltd and Satir.
IDA Ireland has business parks in Dundalk, Drogheda, Cavan and Monaghan. It also has planning permission at a new strategic site in Dundalk for two biopharmaceutical facilities to cater for the generic needs of the industry.
Dundalk Institute of Technology is the main third level college in the Region with a student population of circa 5,000. The Institute provides courses in Business, Engineering, Computing, Science and Creative Media to certificate, degree and postgraduate level. The Region is also within easy reach of Dublin and Belfast’s third level education infrastructure which together host 6 major Universities and 5 Institutes of Technology (over 80,000 student population) providing access to the full range of academic and research facilities.
With the sea to the east, a variety of fresh water lakes to the west and the Mourne and Cooley mountain ranges to the north the region provides access to almost every outdoor pursuit. In addition, very competitive housing costs make the region an attractive location in which to live.

Dundalk with a population of 29,037 (2006 Census) is the administrative capital of County Louth. Located strategically midway between Dublin (80 kms/50mls) and Belfast (80 kms/50mls), the town benefits from pivotal services including rail, road, telecommunications and port access. Within the immediate environs (20kms/12mls) of the town there is a population of 110,750 over 50% of which is in the 24-65 age cohort.
The town has direct access (45 minutes) via the M1 motorway to Dublin International Airport – Ireland’s largest - with a throughput of more than 20.5 million passengers annually. Belfast International and Belfast City airports are within circa one hours reach.
The town currently hosts operations of foreign owned companies including Xerox, Warner Chilcott, Heinz, Moffett, Diageo, ABB, National Pen, Daiwa Securities, Vesta and Satir.
Dundalk Institute of Technology has its campus near the town centre. Areas of research activity include renewable energy, smooth muscle, software technology and freshwater studies. Dundalk is the “home” of the legendary Irish giant Fionn McCool – whose exploits on the Cooley Mountains to the North East of the town are renowned. Much of the cultural focus of the town picks up on this theme. On a more contemporary note the town is home to the Corrs whose band of the same name is famous throughout the world.

Drogheda has a population of 28,973 (2006 Census). Located within 20 minutes of Dublin International Airport and in the Dublin commuter belt (with circa 20,000 commuters each day) the town while maintaining its own clear identity has become part of the Greater Dublin Area. Within a 20km (12mls) catchment the population is 104,821 while 60kms (37mls) encompasses a population of 1.7million.
The town is located on the M1 Motorway just 50kms (30mls) north of Dublin’s city centre within easy reach of all the facilities of the Capital. There are 35 train departures to Dublin from Drogheda Station each day.
The main foreign owned companies with operations in Drogheda are Coca Cola, Becton Dickinson, International Fund Services, and Rexxam. The major Irish public company CRH operates Ireland’s largest cement manufacturing facility to the south west of the town.

Cavan with a population of 3,934 (2006 Census) is the administrative capital of County Cavan. Within a 20kms (12 miles) of the town there is a population of 42,914. The town is located on the N3, within 115kms (70 miles) of Dublin and 134kms (80 miles) of Belfast. Cavan is within 70 minutes commuting time of Dublin International Airport.

The Quinn Group is a multi-facetted indigenous operation within County Cavan engaged in manufacturing and financial service activities. Quinn Direct employs over 550 people in its underwriting activities in Cavan town.
Cavan has been designated a hub for development in Ireland’s National Spatial Strategy. The town provides access to some of Ireland’s and indeed Europe’s best trout and coarse fishing in the abundant fresh water lakes within easy reach of the town.
